We have a new date and and a totally NEW venue for our XTERRA Trail Run Race in 2023 and it is part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series.
Mark you calendars for July 8th, 2023.
Your “Adventure Begins Here” at the base of the majestic Mount Currie. For 2023 we have two trail race offerings. For the adventurous, we have a 22km route that begins in the valley at the base of the Mckenzie trail network.
Runners will have a flat to undulating start before tackling a long climb trail. You will come out at the paraglide launch and beautiful views for a brief respite before heading uphill again into some beautiful forest aptly named Middle Earth. Then you descend all the way back to the valley. Stunning trails and views await you!
To add an extra element we are timing your first climb, and a segment of your descent. There will be prizes for the fastest ascent and fastest descent times. Will you risk blowing up, or your overall position by gunning for those sections? It will be exciting to see tactics play out!
Our trail half marathon is part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series and thus has XTERRA Trail Run World Championship slots on offer.
For those that aren’t up for a tough trail half marathon, we have a fun 9km course too.
963m Ascent | 963m Descent
Starting at Den Duyf Park runners will head to Pemberton Farm E Rd and run along the McKenzie basin access road before heading up Happy Trail.
Happy Trail starts the timed uphill section. So for the climbers it’s your time to shine. At the top of Happy you take the Waco connector which gives a nice respite from the uphill grind until you hit Nimby and the grind resume. After Nimby you take Let it Go till you top out at the lower Paraglide Launch (you’ll be able to replenish yourself here). Now you only have one climb left through the stunning forest which Middle Earth climbs through. We don’t take it all the way to the top as we take a right on Rudy’s trail and start your flight down. The real leg shaking descent is yet to come on the timed downhill segment of Overnight Sensation (don’t miss the views of Mount Currie), runners then finish with Radio Tower and Waterfall (much less demanding then Overnight Sensation) before coming down Mckenzie FSR to the finish. It’s a ripper of a course.
